Once-through cooling systems will also soon be obsolete as they are expensive and waste large amounts of fresh drinking water. The city of Vancouver has put new regulations in place stating that once-through cooling systems will not be allowed to operate after December 31st, 2019. These systems transfers heat to clean, cold drinking water that runs through the unit, and then discharges the used water directly into the sewer. Even with a small building, using several of these units can send thousands of dollars’ worth of clean water down the drain each year.

We advise you to install these alternatives instead of once-through cooling system. And for those who are still operating once-through cooling system, they will need to be replaced before December 31st, 2019. Options for replacing a once-through cooling system include split system air conditioning and reconnecting to the base building cooling system.
